Andersen was first known as a poet, and his poetry won him many patrons and paid his way to travel throughout Europe. His first book of fairy tales was published in 1835. The book was a success, and he followed it with many other volumes of children's stories, almost one a year, right up until 1872!

Hans Christian Andersen wrote his fairy tales as a fiction writer—-they originate with him, albeit with influences from folklore. The Brothers Grimm, on the other hand, were early folklorists who collected and compiled folk tales that were preexisting from oral tradition.

Hans Christian Andersen’s own life seemed to be out of a fairy tale — Charles Dickens was among his friends and admirers, and European princes held him in high regard. The Brothers Grimm are probably the best-known storytellers in the world. Many years have passed since the time Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm released their "Children's and household tales". The first Volume of Grimms' fairy tales was released in 1812, and the second - in 1814.
